Holland America - Eurodam

My family and I took the Eurodam April 2010 for a 7 night Eastern Caribbean cruise.  We had a balcony stateroom Category VB on deck 6, forward.

We truly loved this experience.  From the time we went aboard until we left, we loved it.

The ship is beautiful.  This ship has a real classy to it feel.  "Elegant" my wife said.  Our stateroom was great.  Storage was great and the design of the furniture and overall footprint was excellent.  A great use of space.  Balcony was fine and our location on the starboard side forward was great.

The first couple of hours on board we spent exploring.  Finding all the things we looked at on line that we wanted to see.  Coffee shop, the small food court areas, Club HAL, the library and "Explorations Cafe." (more on this later)

Although the main pool with its retractable roof could get a little busy, the fountain is a nice place to sit.  The hot tubs are hot, not the typical warm water found in most, and the towels where large and clean.  My wife liked the adult Sea View pool area aft.   My son and I spent most of the days at sea on the sports deck, main pool, the promenade deck or taking a culture class in the Queens Lounge.  He checked out Club HAL but he never was and still isn't into these type of activities.  We took a cooking class ($) together and make a  wonderful Cuban meal.  Very hands on and good fun.  The towel folding class was just okay for both of us.

The ports of call we had where, Grand Turk, San Juan, St. Thomas and Half Moon Cay.
On Grand Turk, we went ashore and did the horse back ride and swim.  (These are retired Polo horses and it's a trail/walking ride, not to dangerous.)  My son had never been on a horse (pony only) and this was a way for him to ride a "real" horse.  It was an event for him and loved it when the horses ran through the ocean with riders in bouncing all about.  The only nutty thing was the bus ride to and from the location.  Crazy ^$% driver talked and talked, mostly about dumb stuff like "this house over here belong to some ex-government official that is dead", and that tree there is for hanging out laundry kind of stuff.  And then on the way back....yes the same stories all over again.  My head was about to explode, I wanted to throw his mic out the window.

St. Thomas is cool.  Great place to shop.  Went to Coral World ($$) on the other side of the Island to "swim with the sharks."  Oh, you did get into the water with them, (3 lemons and a baby reef shark) but it was more like a two foot deep tank, about 10' X 10' and my son was not happy about it.   "What, that's it!  No ocean?"  I had to go and pay to be the great protector for a pool dive.  Live and learn.   I stood there, with water, all the way up to my knees mind you, and talked to the host/guide about how long she has lived in St. Thomas.  At least this taxi driver was cool and we had some interesting conversation with him.  In the photo below, the water is really about two feet deep and the shark is about 18 inches.  Over all the place is not at all what you pay for.

In San Juan we stayed local and walked up the hill to the old castle, Fort San Felipe del Morro. ($)  The fort is has an interesting past, and some great drawings deep inside the tunnels.  This was fun for all and not too hard of a journey.  We stopped at the Cold Stone Creamery for some hand dipped iced cream after walking about down town.  It is located just across from the pier.

At the Half Moon, the private island, we did the beach thing.  My son, the fish, swam with the       sting rays ($) and my wife held down the beach waiting for us.  Lunch here was good and the beach area nice.  Only thing my wife did not like was the tender boat that we had to take to and from the ship.

Food on the ship, in our humble opinion was really pretty good.  Only one meal at the Italian Canaletto restaurant was below par.  The main dinning on formal nights (2) was excellent as was the Pinnacle Grill and Tamarind.  These last two are a up charge but worth the money.
Room service was timely.  Over all the service of the staff and food quality was great.

Now this stuck out to me and my wife.  The buffet.  I am not a buffet guy.  "Never know where someone elses hands have been" kind of thing.  Here, and this is big, you get a plate and the servers on the other side of the glass put the food on to your plate.  NO sloppy spoons to touch, no double dipped serving spoons.  None of that.  You point at what you want and they make it (omelets) or get the food for you and place it right there on your plate.  This section of the ship called the Lido Restaurant, is very well thought out.  After getting your buffet breakfast or lunch, you sit and servers come to you with drinks.  Iced tea, soda, beers or wine are all available.
Note, on this ship, Purel type sanitation stations where everywhere.

The shows and nightly entertainment on board was pretty good too.  There was a magician/ comedy fella that was over the top funny.  We all had a good time at his show.

The public restrooms are easy to find and always seemed clean.  Public areas are nice and lots of art work to view as your walking about.

One of the best parts of the cruise was time time my son and I had together up in Exploration Cafe.  There, they have board games, Internet access and books.  We played chess every evening while mom got dressed for dinner.  Game after game.  This is where my drink bill was doing the damage.  Its a great view and very few people seemed to know about this area of the ship.

We really have no negative thoughts about this cruise and are taking the Eurodam out again in a few months.  We truly had a great time.  We rated this vacation a "Do Over" or a 9 out of 10.
